Neighborhood Community Legislative meeting January 6th

Neighborhood/Community City Legislative Agenda Gathering, Jan. 6th, 2009 at 7 PM in City Council Chambers

Neighborhood, business, and other community-based organizations play an integral part in assuring community and neighborhood livability. I continue to be committed to working with Portland neighborhoods, businesses, and community organizations to provide services and information to assist in empowering residents to identify and support issues that benefit Portland. One way we can support each others efforts is to explore joint legislative objectives and work together in Salem to achieve positive results.

President of Ireland to Visit Portland

The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, will dedicate the new Oregon Irish Potato Famine Memorial 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 13th, at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. This will be the first visit to Portland by a serving President of Ireland.

The Oregon Irish Potato Famine Memorial was commissioned by Portland's Ancient Order of Hibernians, to construct a Memorial in Portland to those Irish who died of hunger and disease during the Great Irish Potato Famine, An Gorta Mor, and to commemorate the dedication and commitment of those Irish who made that great trek to the West, and lived out the remainder of their lives in Oregon.

The Memorial is a Celtic High Cross modeled on the ancient Cross of the Scriptures from Clonmacnoise, County Offaly, Ireland, which was carved in 916 A.D. The newly remastered replica was hand carved in Donegal Town, Ireland, by Brendan Mc Gloin, an Irish stone sculptor and artist.

For more information, contact Portland's Hibernians at 503-701 9726 or e-mail OregonIrishMemorial@gmail.com.

Thinking of Harvey Milk on Election Day.

Harvey Milk circa 1977Harvey Milk circa 1977Last week while at a conference on transit oriented development, I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the opening of Milk, Gus Van Sant's new film about the life and times of Harvey Milk. Briefly, Harvey was the first openly gay elected official when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. A year later, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Supervisor Dan White.  Mr. White avoided significant prison time by succesfully arguing that his poor diet caused him to be temporarly insane.
